'FIRST' choice for Sailing Academy
As daylight saving has come to an end, so to has the completion of a successful first term for the Bellerive Yacht Club Sailing Academy.
The Beneteau First 35 has proven to be the perfect fit for training courses designed to cater to students with little or no experience prior sailing experience. These people are able to enjoy the thrill of sailing and learn the ropes, aboard a brand new yacht in comfort.
The boat was commissioned in Melbourne by the Sundance team, then members of the BYC Sailing Committee and others involved in the Sailing Academy were invited to Sandringham for the sea trials.
The delivery back to Bellerive was undertaken with instructors Harold Clarke and Mike Denny onboard, who were more than impressed with the capabilities of the First 35 during their crossing of Bass Strait.
Sundance Marine have made the boat available and will be supporting the BYC training programs throughout their initial sessions and into the future. There is a real hope that the program grows to the point where additional boats are required.
BYC Marine development Manager Andrew Davidson said the Beneteau First 35 had been chosen for the academy because it was a stable and fast racer cruiser, similar to the First 40 versions that have achieved great success in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
More courses are planned to be run throughout the winter, including participation in some of the winter series races organized by the BYC and other clubs.

Club Racing Results
The biggest event for Port Phillip Bay last month was the SYC Centenary Regatta which also comprised of the Victorian IRC and AMS Championships on the Saturday 30th April. Whilst Beneteau did not walk away with any divisional or handicap wins in the regatta, Mike Welsh and crew on their First 40 finished 2nd overall on AMS. Well done guys!
It is also worth noting that Phil Gomez and crew on his First 27.7 finished 3rd overall on corrected time in the fleet of 43 yacths entered in the Pursuit Cruiser race. Another nine Beneteau's also competed in the pursuit race which seemed to suit the smaller sized yachts due to the very light winds on the day.
