More Success for Beneteau Firsts!

Bruce McCraken's Beneteau First 45 'Ikon' (Vic) was outstanding and extremely consistent in Division B of the 2011 Audi Victoria Week, pushing away the threat of three other First 45's and four First 40's including two that were only launched the week before and finished extremely well placed considering the lack of preperation. Darryl Hodgkinson and crew on board his Beneteau First 45 'Victoire' (NSW) was third overall.

In the Audi IRC Division C, Peter Jackson and crew on their First 34.7 'Stitched Up' finished 3rd overall on AMS after battling with a strong performing Adams 10.

The Club Marine Cruising (spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions) yielded by far the biggest entry with 159 yachts gracing the event. Never did Corio Bay look more dazzling and colourful than when these yachts made up the bulk of the fleet in the 28 nautical mile Portarlington Race.

'Folie A Deux' Goes North

“Folie” is a Beneteau Cyclades 39.3 which we purchased from Sundance in 2006. After some shakedown cruises to Tassie and a fair bit of racing we decided to take a year off work and go north. We took our time up the east coast and enjoyed fabulous weather.

Arriving at the Whitsundays, we noticed that the interest in visiting from our southern friends increased markedly and we had 7 weeks of entertaining. The 3 cabins got full useage. The highlight was an overnight stay at Bait Reef, the closest reef to the Whitsundays , 16 miles from Hayman Island. There are Marine Park Buoys for secure mooring. The marine life and water clarity was wonderful.

We again managed to get great weather for the trip to Cairns and then participated in the 3rd annual Louisiades Rally. This was the undoubted highlight of the whole year. 24 boats participated. We took 4 days and sailed all the way in 15-25 kt trade winds. The boat stood up to it really well though the skippers and crew suffered a bit of the “mal de mer”.

We awoke the morning after our arrival to sailing canoes, coral islands, warm seas and very friendly locals who were eager to trade freshly caught lobsters and fruit for clothing , tools and fishing gear. The rally took us to a variety of islands and gave us a chance to get to know the locals and experience some of the culture. We also made some wonderful friends from all over Australia.

Bryan and I took up keel boat sailing in 2004. We've had a steep learning curve but so much enjoyment and adventure in our boat and this year was the culmination of a dream. If you think after reading this that you could do it too.....as the Nike ad says..”Just Do It”.
